Piscataquis County, formed in 1838, is Maine’s least populous county with about 16,800 residents. The county seat is Dover-Foxcroft, with other small towns including Guilford, Greenville, and Milo. The economy is rooted in forestry, paper and wood products, agriculture, and outdoor recreation, with Moosehead Lake and surrounding wilderness areas central to tourism. Median household income is around $52,000, well below the state average, reflecting persistent rural economic challenges and an aging population.

Politically, Piscataquis is one of Maine’s most reliably Republican counties, with strong conservative support across rural towns. Independent candidates also perform well, consistent with Maine’s political culture. Local issues include rural healthcare, infrastructure, property taxes, energy costs, and land use policy. With its vast forests and small population, Piscataquis represents the challenges facing rural Maine communities.
