Cumberland County, Maine
Cumberland County, established in 1760, is Maine’s most populous county with about 305,000 residents. The county seat is Portland, which is also the state’s largest city and economic hub. Other major communities include Westbrook, South Portland, Falmouth, and Scarborough. The economy is diverse, driven by finance, healthcare, education, shipping, tourism, and technology. Median household income is about $80,000, well above the state average, reflecting both urban prosperity and rising housing costs.
Politically, Cumberland is Maine’s most Democratic-leaning county, strongly supporting Democrats in recent state and federal elections. However, independents maintain influence, especially in suburban towns. Key issues include housing affordability, property taxes, public transportation, and coastal development. With Portland’s role as a cultural and commercial center, Cumberland County sets much of the state’s economic and political agenda.
