Androscoggin County, Maine

Androscoggin County, established in 1854, has about 111,000 residents. The county seat is Auburn, while Lewiston, Maine’s second-largest city, is its economic and cultural hub. Historically driven by textile mills and manufacturing, the economy now relies on healthcare, education, retail, and small businesses, with Bates College a major employer. Median household income is around $60,000, below the state average, reflecting the region’s strong working-class base.

Politically, Androscoggin is a swing county. Once a Democratic stronghold rooted in organized labor, it has shifted toward Republicans in recent elections, though independents remain influential. Local issues include jobs, property taxes, housing affordability, healthcare, and education funding. With its urban centers, immigrant communities, and industrial legacy, Androscoggin is one of Maine’s most politically competitive regions.
