Aroostook County, Maine

Aroostook County, known as “The County,” is Maine’s largest by area and home to about 67,000 residents. The county seat is Houlton, while Presque Isle and Caribou are the largest population centers. Historically agricultural, Aroostook is a leading producer of potatoes, lumber, and forestry products, though healthcare, education, and cross-border trade with Canada also drive the economy. Median household income is about $55,000, below the state average, reflecting rural economic challenges and an aging population.

Politically, Aroostook has leaned Republican in recent decades, though independents remain strong in local elections. Key issues include job creation, rural healthcare, property taxes, energy costs, and agricultural policy. With its vast geography, Canadian border ties, and strong agricultural heritage, Aroostook plays a unique role in Maine’s economic and political landscape.
